Whilst many bingo players view the bingo game as nothing more than a game of chance that is won simply by being in the right place at the right time with the right ticket, others are a tad more superstitious. These players try to attract the attention of Lady Luck with a variety of "lucky" objects and rituals, and we thought it would be fun to run through a few of the most popular ones.
A surprisingly large number of players like to use the same pen to mark or daub their bingo tickets week after week, especially if they have already won using that particular pen on a previous occasion. The type of pen doesn't seem to be important; everything from the humble biro to gold coloured super-daubers are used. All that matters - as is the case with all of these superstitions - is that you believe it will bring you a dash of extra luck when you are playing with it. Online players can't use this idea as it stands, but they can do something similar by choosing a daubing style and colour that makes them feel lucky and sticking to it game after game.
A mascot can be anything - a pair of fluffy dice, a Troll doll, a purse or even a badge. If you already have a small object that you think of as being particularly lucky then you can get into the habit of taking that to the bingo club or placing it on your desk when playing online. If you don't have such an object but you want one, close your eyes and think of the word "luck" until an image appears in your mind, then go and get yourself an object that represents that image.
Some bingo players are convinced that if they wear a certain piece of jewellery, be it a ring, necklace or bracelet, they tend to experience more good luck than when they don't wear it. Jewellery items that suggest luck or wealth - such as charm bracelets or rings and brooches incorporating coins - are particularly popular. Another advantage of jewellery is that you can wear it all day long, and be lucky in life as well as in bingo!
Many bingo players like to buy a particular number of bingo tickets or strips according to their lucky number. For example, if your lucky number was 7 you might buy 7 tickets or 7 strips. Lucky numbers are commonly based on your full name, but if you don't know yours already then watch this space - our very own guide to calculating your lucky number is coming soon!
Is luck really something that we can attract in quantity by using a lucky pen, mascot, number or wearing certain jewellery items? The jury is out on that, but since it doesn't hurt to try, why not give one or more of the above ideas a go and let us know if you start winning more bingo games as a result!
